| Home | Dr. David Jacobs' Account of a "Hybrid" Warning |
In October 2007, when I published this website, it contained a short, diplomatic account of my experience as a research subject of "alien abduction" researcher, Dr. David Jacobs, of Temple University. This was despite the fact that the final year of my work with him had, in my opinion, degenerated into a psychologically abusive farce.
The events that occurred centered around the claims of Dr. Jacobs' webmaster, Elizabeth Smith (pseudonym), who was also his research subject. (Elizabeth uses, amongst others, the pseudonyms "Becky", and possibly, "Karen" as well.)
Dr. Jacobs began receiving communications via email and AOL Instant Messenger from Elizabeth's computer which she told him were from alien-human "hybrids". Eventually, he received a "warning" from one of her alleged "hybrids" on instant messenger saying that it was dangerous for him to work with me as there were "hybrids" around me who were very concerned about "security" (see Dr. David Jacobs' Account of a "Hybrid" Warning - Audio Clip.) I came to the opinion that Elizabeth had written the "hybrid" instant messaging herself. Dr. Jacobs, however, told me that he believed that it was authentic. In hindsight, I am of the opinion that he was engaged in an abusive psychological "game" with her, that he subsequently involved me in.
Although it is my right to talk openly about what occurred while I was Dr. Jacobs' research subject, I wished to move forward with my own research in a positive atmosphere. I decided to publish my longitudinal study of my anomalous experiences on this website, and I asked him whether we could write a joint statement that explained what had occurred in a way that we were both comfortable with. He was concerned that if I talked about the events in public that it would leave him open to attack from debunkers. He became overwrought, and responded by threatening to reveal my identity (although he later retracted this threat) and to "paint a horrible picture" of me if I talked publicly about what had occurred. Although I was shocked by his response, I persevered in trying to work out an agreement with him (see Audio Clip 8 below.) He then did agree to work on such a joint statement.
In the meantime, Dr. Jacobs forwarded me a letter from his close friend and colleague, "alien abduction" researcher, the late Budd Hopkins, from which it was apparent that Dr. Jacobs had defamed me. I queried this with Dr. Jacobs and he denied having spoken to Mr. Hopkins. I told Dr. Jacobs that I did not accept this, and it lead to conflict between us that eventuated in the breakdown of our discussions about how to publicly describe what had occurred while we were working together.
Nevertheless, I still wished to move forward with my own research in a positive atmosphere. I subsequently wrote a statement about my work with Dr. Jacobs that glossed over much of what had occurred, presenting only a bare outline of the events. I used words that he had suggested to me that he was comfortable with, before our discussions had broken down, to describe the events (see Audio Clip 8 below.) I did this so that people would have enough knowledge of what had occurred to be able to assess my case and my anomalous experiences during that time, and to make clear my opinion that Elizabeth's claims were a hoax, but in a way that caused the minimum amount of embarrassment to both Dr. Jacobs and myself.
Immediately after I published this website, however, Elizabeth posted a statement on her blog site in which she presented an extremely dishonest account of my work with Dr. Jacobs and engaged in a character assassination of me. She ended her posting with an implied threat that she might at some point choose to reveal my identity.
Dr. Jacobs guaranteed to me when he first involved Elizabeth in my work that she would never reveal my identity, and I wrote to him to express my serious concerns about her posting. I never received a response.
Elizabeth subsequently put a disclaimer at the top of her posting stating: "Dr. David M. Jacobs is in no way associated with the following statement. He did not contribute to it, nor did he "approve" or "disapprove" of it prior to posting. He had nothing to do with it. The ideas, thoughts, and facts contained in it are solely my own." However, Dr. Jacobs did not refute any of the outrageous statements that Elizabeth made in her posting and, instead, gave his silent support to it. In my opinion he did this in order to damage my reputation by implication, so that people would not take seriously what I said about his unethical behavior towards me.
I realized that in order to defend my reputation and research, that I would have to present the material that I had relating to my work with Dr. Jacobs on this website. I subsequently provided some of that information. However, I still hoped that either Elizabeth would confess to her, in my opinion, hoax, or that Dr. Jacobs would rectify the situation. I decided to wait for several months before presenting the bulk of the information, to allow them the opportunity to do so. I hoped to avoid unnecessary public embarrassment to all concerned. Several months later, I wrote to Elizabeth asking her to rectify the situation. I never received a response.
Subsequently, in April 2010, Dr. Jacobs published an extremely dishonest and defamatory statement about me on his website, and he went on to defame me on a number of radio shows. In my opinion he did this to try to stop people from examining the evidence that I have presented of his misconduct as a researcher.
A full account of what occurred while I was Dr. Jacobs' research subject will be available in the future. In the meantime, I have presented here audio clips of several telephone conversations that I had with him about the events. These, in conjunction with the information that I have provided elsewhere on this website provide an overview of what occurred.
I encourage people to view the information that I have provided in the spirit that it is presented, as an attempt to shed light on a complex situation in order to understand it, to make known disturbing psychological abuse of human research subjects by an academic researcher, to expose claims that, in my view, are a hoax, and to defend my personal reputation. The events that occurred were, on one level, a comic farce, and no doubt will provoke laughter and disbelief. But, behind that are serious issues of human research subjects being hurt by the appalling practices of a leading researcher in the field. I hope that my account of these events will illustrate some of the pitfalls of "alien abduction" research, so that others can learn from this unfortunate series of events. Perhaps then, some good can come out of it after all.

SUMMARY OF EVENTS
1) I have had anomalous experiences all of my life.
2) For about ten years I saw a therapist who helped me to deal with my experiences.
3) My former therapist considers me to be psychologically normal and not delusional or suffering from mental illness.
4) I have presented a psychological assessment of me by my former therapist in:
Therapy Assessment
5) In early 2001, at my former therapist's suggestion, I began to research my experiences in order to understand them better. I kept a record of them as they happened, and wrote a history of them.
6) In mid 2002, my former therapist contacted Dr. Jacobs on my behalf. I made contact with Dr. Jacobs myself shortly afterwards.
7) Dr. Jacobs was interested in my research on my experiences. We kept in touch by telephone and email, and he assisted me with my research.
8) In late 2004, Dr. Jacobs suggested conducting hypnosis with me over the telephone.
9) I thought that Dr. Jacobs was an ethical academic researcher, so I agreed to undergo hypnosis with him.
10) Over the following two years, Dr. Jacobs conducted thirty-seven hypnosis sessions with me over the telephone. Each session lasted on average about five hours long.
11) Dr. Jacobs told me that I am one of three people with whom he has done the most amount of hypnosis.
12) Consequently, the hypnosis that Dr. Jacobs conducted with me is probably representative of his use of hypnosis with other research subjects as well.
13) During the hypnosis that Dr. Jacobs conducted with me, he engaged in extensive leading and suggestion, which I was not fully aware of at the time.
14) Dr. Jacobs told me that he believed that my hypnotic memories were largely accurate. As I believed that he was a competent and ethical hypnotist, I thought that this was the case.
15) I only realized the extent of Dr. Jacobs' leading and suggestion much later, when I listened to the recordings of all of my hypnosis sessions.
16) I now believe that most of my hypnotically retrieved memories are probably false memories that I confabulated as a result of Dr. Jacobs' leading.
17) During 2005, Dr. Jacobs made suggestions to me while I was hypnotized about "hybrids" abusing and sexually assaulting people. Consequently, I began to "remember" events like this during the hypnosis sessions.
18) As I did not realize the extent to which Dr. Jacobs was leading me while I was hypnotized, I thought that the "memories" were probably real.
19) I have a sleep disorder in which I engage in a range of complex behaviors while I am asleep. I do things such as writing notes, talking on the telephone, and going outside my apartment, while I am asleep.
20) I appear to meet The American Sleep Disorders Association's minimum criteria for a diagnosis of REM Sleep Behavior Disorder. I have provided information about this in:
My Sleep Disorder
21) I told Dr. Jacobs about my sleep behavior before I became his research subject.
22) In early 2004, before I became Dr. Jacobs' research subject, I sent him video recordings of myself writing notes in my sleep. I have presented two of the video recordings in:
My Sleep Disorder - Video Clip 1 - January 6, 2004
My Sleep Disorder - Video Clip 2 - January 20, 2004
23) Although I knew that I did things in my sleep, I did not know at the time that it was a sleep disorder. I did not think much about it, or recognize the many of the probable instances of it until much later.
24) Dr. Jacobs did not say anything to me about my sleep behavior.
25) My sleep behavior appears to be triggered by stress.
26) During 2005, as my hypnotically retrieved memories became more distressing, and were reinforced by Dr. Jacobs as being real, I periodically noticed that things had been moved, or changed, in my apartment while I was asleep.
27) As I was having hypnosis with Dr. Jacobs in which I remembered "hybrids" being in my apartment, I thought that "hybrids" must have been responsible for this.
28) Dr. Jacobs reinforced to me under hypnosis that this was the case.
29) However, I now realize that they were simply things that I had done myself while I was asleep, as part of my sleep behavior.
30) Dr. Jacobs talked to me about his work with his other research subjects, including while I was hypnotized.
31) In 2005, Dr. Jacobs talked to me about a research subject he was working with who uses the pseudonym "Elizabeth" (she also uses the pseudonym "Becky", and possibly "Karen" as well.)
32) Much later, I came to the opinion that Elizabeth was a hoaxer.
33) Subsequently, another former research subject of Dr. Jacobs contacted me through my website. He told me that he had set up a test to check on Elizabeth's claims, and that he had caught her out, as detailed below.
34) Elizabeth told me that she grew up with a violent father who had untreated bi-polar disorder. She has several children, all of whom have problems of one kind or another, and one of whom is a special needs child, who place heavy demands on her.
35) Elizabeth has written many science fiction stories, that she has published on the internet, which have similarities to her abduction "experiences". I am of the opinion that she has developed a coping strategy of using fantasy to deal with problems in her life.
36) Later, Dr. Jacobs told me that he had conducted hypnosis with Elizabeth on instant messenger for a period, without performing any hypnotic inductions, and that she had "remembered" her "experiences", as detailed below. In my opinion this was because all of her hypnosis sessions were probably based on fictional events, and the hypnosis on instant messenger was simply an extension of that.
37) At the time it never occurred to me that Elizabeth might be a hoaxer, and I trusted her.
38) Dr. Jacobs has published Elizabeth's account of her early "alien abduction" "experiences" on his website, in which she uses the pseudonym "Becky". Her account is in:
Journey of Discovery by Becky
39) Dr. Jacobs told me that Elizabeth had said to him that "hybrids" associated with her had threatened his life.
40) Dr. Jacobs told me, including while I was hypnotized, that "aliens" had a program in which they were using "hybrids" to infiltrate human society. He said that they perceived him as a threat because he knew about their program from his work with his research subjects.
41) After suggestion from Dr. Jacobs, I began to remember "hybrids/aliens" telling me that I must not talk to him about my experiences.
42) Eventually, after leading from Dr. Jacobs, I remembered "hybrids/aliens" making threats against him, and being shown an image of him floating face down in a pool of water.
43) In early 2006, Dr. Jacobs told me that he and Elizabeth were writing their emails to each other in code, and that this prevented "hybrids/aliens" from knowing that he was researching her case.
44) Dr. Jacobs then asked me to write my emails to him about my experiences in code, so that "hybrids/aliens" would not know that he was researching my case.
45) At that time I realized that there was something wrong, but I was being so intensively hypnotized by Dr. Jacobs that it made it more difficult for me to gain perspective on it, and to disentangle myself from it.
46) From early-mid 2006 through early 2007, Dr. Jacobs asked me to participate in a long series of psychologically abusive "tactics", ostensibly to prevent "hybrids/aliens" from knowing that he was researching my case.
47) In mid 2006, Dr. Jacobs told me that he had begun having instant messaging conversations with "hybrids" who were using Elizabeth's computer.
48) Dr. Jacobs told me that Elizabeth's "hybrid" instant messaging communications with him began "in the guise of Elizabeth".
49) Dr. Jacobs said that in May 2006, he received a communication from Elizabeth via her computer saying something to the effect that she had lied to him about everything, that she was a bad person, and that she was sorry.
50) In my opinion, Elizabeth was almost certainly trying to confess to Dr. Jacobs at that point.
51) However, Dr. Jacobs told me that he immediately rejected it.
52) Dr. Jacobs told me that when he asked Elizabeth about it later, she told him that she had no memory of sending it.
53) Dr. Jacobs said that he then conducted a hypnosis session with Elizabeth on it, and she "remembered" a "hybrid" forcing her to write it.
54) Dr. Jacobs said that in June 2006, it happened again, but that this time Elizabeth refused to write it.
55) Dr. Jacobs told me that the "hybrid" then took over and wrote it while pretending to be Elizabeth.
56) Dr. Jacobs said that the "hybrid" then stopped pretending to be Elizabeth, and wrote to him openly as a "hybrid".
57) Consequently, what started out as Elizabeth sending a communication to Dr. Jacobs confessing that she had lied to him about everything, got turned into "hybrid" instant messaging instead, because he rejected her confession.
58) Dr. Jacobs told me that he pretended to the "hybrids" on instant messenger that he was a researcher in Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD), and that Elizabeth had MPD, so that the "hybrids/aliens" would not know that he was researching her case.
59) Dr. Jacobs told me that the "hybrids" had been threatening and aggressive to him on instant messenger, and that they had told him that what he was doing was "dangerous."
60) During the next hypnosis session that Dr. Jacobs conducted with me, he put hypnotic suggestions in my mind that I had Multiple Personality Disorder and should take medication for it.
61) Dr. Jacobs did this ostensibly to try to fool the "hybrids/aliens" so that they would not go after him, not because he really believed that I had MPD.
62) I have presented an audio clip of Dr. Jacobs putting the hypnotic suggestions in my mind that I had Multiple Personality Disorder in:
Hypnotic Suggestions of Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD)
63) Dr. Jacobs ostensibly believed that the "hybrids/aliens" would read my mind, see that he had a new theory 'that everyone telling abduction stories was actually suffering from MPD', and that the "hybrids/aliens" would therefore loose interest in him.
64) Dr. Jacobs was ostensibly trying to use my mind as a shield to protect himself from "hybrids/aliens", whom he said he believed would use mind control on him, or even possibly kill him, to stop his "alien abduction" research.
65) However, I am now of the opinion that Dr. Jacobs knew that he was not really in danger from "hybrids/aliens", because I do not think that he would have put himself or his family in danger in order to do his "alien abduction" research.
66) Dr. Jacobs did not ask my permission before he put the suggestions in my mind that I had Multiple Personality Disorder, and I did not know that he was going to do it.
67) I realized at the time that Dr. Jacobs' suggestions were intended for the "hybrids/aliens" benefit, but because I was hypnotized, they still affected me.
68) After Dr. Jacobs had brought me out of the hypnotic state, he continued to reinforce to me that I must keep it in my mind that I had Multiple Personality Disorder, so that the "hybrids/aliens" would believe it.
69) I tried to deal with it by making light of it at the time, but it nevertheless frightened me.
70) Dr Jacobs is not a medical doctor. He is a historian. Even if he had really believed that I had Multiple Personality Disorder, which he did not, he would not have been able to diagnose it.
71) In my opinion, Dr. Jacob's actions were the self absorbed and unethical actions of a researcher so involved in his fantasy world that he lost total regard for my well-being, and had no concern for the injury and ramifications that those hypnotic suggestions might ultimately have on me.
72) At one stage, Dr. Jacobs insisted that I pretend that I had Multiple Personality Disorder in my email communications with him.
73) Dr. Jacobs began to put post-hypnotic suggestions in my mind that I would forget the contents of my hypnosis sessions, so that "hybrids/aliens" could not access them if they read my mind.
74) Subsequently, I had no memory of large sections of my hypnosis sessions. I only realized this much later, when I listened to the recordings of the hypnosis sessions.
75) The fact that I had no memory of large sections of my hypnosis sessions made it more difficult for me to process them consciously.
76) As a result of Dr. Jacobs' post-hypnotic suggestions that I would forget the contents of my hypnosis sessions, I had no memory of Dr. Jacobs putting the hypnotic suggestions in my mind that I had Multiple Personality Disorder, although it is something that I would never normally forget.
77) As I had no conscious memory of Dr. Jacobs putting hypnotic suggestions in my mind that I had Multiple Personality Disorder, when I later filed a complaint with Temple University about Dr. Jacobs' conduct, I could not include it in my initial complaint, because I had no awareness of it (although I did remember that he had asked me to write my emails to him pretending that I had MPD, and I included that in my complaint.)
78) It was only later, when I listened to the recordings of the hypnosis sessions, that I realized what Dr. Jacobs had done.
79) After Dr. Jacobs had put the hypnotic suggestions in my mind that I had Multiple Personality Disorder, I sometimes found myself thinking that I had it. I used to wonder why I thought that, and I decided that it must be because I was under stress. Now I know that it was because of his hypnotic suggestions to me.
80) In mid 2006, Dr. Jacobs told me that "hybrids" associated with Elizabeth were trying to hunt him down. He said that he was "on the run" from them, and that he and his family were terrified.
81) In hindsight, I do not believe that Dr. Jacobs would have put himself, or his family, in real danger, just to continue to work with Elizabeth. I am of the opinion that he actually knew that she was a hoaxer, but that he perpetuated it because he got something out of it.
82) In late August 2006, Elizabeth published an account on her blog site of how "hybrids" were using her computer to communicate with Dr. Jacobs. In addition, she described their attempts to use her to hunt him down, and how she had managed to resist them.
83) Elizabeth later took down her blog site, at the same time that Dr. Jacobs published a defamatory statement about me on his website which omitted all mention of her "hybrid" instant messaging, and the "hybrids'" supposed attempts to find him, as detailed below.
84) I began to notice inconsistencies in some of Elizabeth's claims.
85) However, because I trusted Elizabeth, I did not think that the inconsistencies were because she was lying. Instead, I wondered whether they were something to do with the phenomenon itself.
86) Dr. Jacobs told me that he had made an "agreement" with Elizabeth's "hybrids", in which they would not continue to hunt him down in exchange for him having regular conversations with them on instant messenger, so that they could check on him.
87) Subsequently, Dr. Jacobs told me that he had regular conversations with the "hybrids" on instant messenger that generally lasted for about four hours at a time.
88) Dr. Jacobs periodically told me that he knew about certain aspects of "alien/hybrid" life, and I gathered that it was from the "hybrid" instant messaging. I had a sense that the "hybrids" (Elizabeth) described their society as rigid, authoritarian, hierarchical, and concerned about "security".
89) Dr. Jacobs told me that he had asked a Temple University psychiatrist, Dr. Roy Steinhouse, to read the transcripts of the "hybrid" instant messaging, in order to obtain his opinion of the "hybrids'" psychology.
90) Information about Dr. Roy Steinhouse is available on the Temple University website at:
Temple University School of Medicine: Roy Steinhouse, MD
91) In addition to being a psychiatrist, Dr. Steinhouse was a major in the United States Army.
92) Dr. Jacobs told me that Dr. Steinhouse sometimes attended the get-togethers that he held at his home for his former and current research subjects. He said that Dr. Steinhouse was of the opinion that "alien abduction" experiences are not a symptom of mental illness, and that he was interested in attending the get-togethers for that reason.
93) Dr. Jacobs told me that Dr. Steinhouse came to his home and that he showed him the transcripts of the "hybrid" instant messaging. He said that Dr. Steinhouse was "absolutely no help whatsoever", that he had just said things to him like "try to gain his [the "hybrid's"] trust", and that he then said "be careful" on his way out.
94) In my opinion, any competent psychiatrist confronted with such a situation would have immediately questioned whether Elizabeth had written the instant messaging, and what might have caused her to do so. In addition, in my opinion they would have questioned Dr. Jacobs' competence at that stage for failing to question it himself, and would have enquired as to whether any other research subjects of his were in a position where they could be harmed by his conduct. In my opinion a competent psychiatrist would have gone to Temple University at that time, and asked them to investigate Dr. Jacobs' research in respect to the safety of his research subjects.
95) I do not know whether Dr. Steinhouse did any of these things or not. If he did, Dr. Jacobs did not tell me about it.
96) Dr. Jacobs continued to ask me to participate in bizarre "tactics" to prevent "hybrids" from knowing he was researching my case. This included him having Elizabeth contact me the night before a hypnosis session to tell me that I had to pretend that he was someone else during the session, followed by him telling me himself that it was a requirement for his protection.
97) Dr. Jacobs began to tell me things that were not true, so that "hybrids" would believe it. Later, he told me that he had done this. He said that he had to tailor everything that he said to me so that it was what he wanted the hybrids to believe.
98) By late 2006, I was under severe stress because of Dr. Jacobs' hypnosis with me, and his bizarre conduct between the hypnosis sessions.
99) I became depressed, could not sleep properly, and had terrible nightmares.
100) At times I begged Dr. Jacobs to stop asking me to engage in his "tactics". At times he said that he would stop, but then he continued on regardless. At the same time, he guilt-tripped me, and said that I should go along with everything that he asked me to do.
101) I felt caught in the situation, and powerless to do anything about it. Dr. Jacobs used to tell me while I was hypnotized that I was powerless to do anything, and I think that also contributed to it. It was a very strange feeling, as I am by nature an independent person, and I had never been in a situation like that at any other time of my life.
102) In addition, I was engaging in sleep behavior because of the stress that I was under. As I did not know that I had a sleep disorder, the effects of my sleep behavior appeared to me to "corroborate" Dr. Jacobs' suggestions about "hybrids", and my hypnotically retrieved "memories" of them.
103) In late 2006 and 2007, I sent some emails to my former therapist, Dr. Jacobs, and Elizabeth while I was asleep.
104) In the emails, I wrote short sentences repeating things that under hypnosis I had remembered "hybrids/aliens" saying to me. In some of them I also asked them to protect me. I think that this was my subconscious asking for help, because of the psychological abuse that I was being subjected to at the time.
105) Dr. Jacobs immediately told me that "hybrids" had written the emails. As I was not aware that I had a sleep disorder, and under hypnosis I remembered "hybrids" in my apartment and looking at my computer, I thought that he must be right.
106) Elizabeth reached out to me at that stage, and pretended to support me. She told me that she was my friend and was there for me. I opened up to her and talked to her about the stress that I was under. She pretended to be sympathetic, and said that she was going through the same thing, which made me trust her more.
107) I offered support to Elizabeth in return. I spent time writing to her, and trying to make her feel better.
108) Dr. Jacobs began to send emails to me that he had written to my "hybrids", and he told me to leave them where they could see them.
109) I began to receive aggressive emails from Elizabeth's computer, which she told me were written by "hybrids".
110) Dr. Jacobs told me that Elizabeth had claimed that "hybrids" associated with me had gone over to her home, and had met with her and her "hybrids" about my emails. She said that the "hybrids" had said that they had written them.
111) Elizabeth told Dr. Jacobs that she had seen "hybrids" throwing me down on a bed and assaulting me.
112) At that stage, I felt as though I was caught in a nightmare that I could not get out of.
113) Although Dr, Jacobs knew that I was suffering from depression by that stage, he continued to conduct hypnosis with me, and to act out his psychological "game" with me.
114) Dr. Jacobs also did this with Elizabeth, at a time when she was clearly under stress herself.
115) Elizabeth told Dr. Jacobs that she was losing interest in her children, and she
was having problems caring for them properly.
116) I was concerned for Elizabeth, and I tried to tell Dr. Jacobs that I thought that she was depressed. However, he just told me that the "hybrids/aliens" had made her feel that way.
117) Eventually, I recognized my own language in my sleep emails, and I realized that I was writing them.
118) As I did not know that I had a sleep disorder, I thought that I must have developed a psychiatric disorder in which I was writing emails and not remembering it. However, I subsequently changed my mind when I realized that I was not manifesting serious psychiatric symptoms in my normal life, other than being very depressed.
119) Instead, I thought that I must have developed some sort of localized stress disorder that was manifesting that way.
120) I tried to talk to Dr. Jacobs about this. However, he told me that it was not possible, and that my emails were written by "hybrids".
121) In early 2007, Dr. Jacobs conducted a hypnosis session with me on one of my emails.
122) Before the hypnosis session, Dr. Jacobs engaged in strong suggestion that "hybrids" had either written the emails, or dictated them to me to write. Consequently, during the hypnosis session, I remembered a "hybrid" making me write the email, and staring at the keyboard as I did it.
123) However, after the hypnosis session, faint memories came back to me of myself writing the email, but the hybrid was not there. I think that I started to wake up slightly as I was writing it, and this was what I remembered. I think that it was myself who had been staring at the keyboard, and not a "hybrid".
124) I told Dr. Jacobs that after the hypnosis session I had remembered writing the email, but that the "hybrid" that I had recalled under hypnosis had not been there.
125) Dr. Jacobs told me that this was not possible. He said that the only thing I could question was whether a "hybrid" had written it, or whether they had dictated it to me.
126) By that stage, I realized that if I had written the emails, it meant that Elizabeth was a hoaxer, as she had claimed that "hybrids" had told her that they had written them.
127) I was distressed by the situation, as I still believed that Elizabeth meant well, and I thought that she had done what she had done as a result of stress.
128) In February 2007, Dr. Jacobs told me that he had received a warning from one of Elizabeth's "hybrids" on instant messenger, saying that it was dangerous for him to work with me. I have presented an audio clip of Dr. Jacobs reading me the instant messaging transcript in:
Dr. David Jacobs' Account of a "Hybrid" Warning - Audio Clip
129) In my opinion, Elizabeth wrote the "warning" to Dr. Jacobs because I had been questioning the situation, and if I was right about my having written my sleep emails, it meant that she was a hoaxer, because she had claimed that "hybrids" had told her that they had written them.
130) Nevertheless, I felt sorry for Elizabeth, as I saw it as an act of desperation on her part, because she was not coping in her own life.
131) At that stage I realized that I could not go on in the situation. I decided to end my work with Dr. Jacobs. I have presented an audio clip of the conversation that I had with Dr. Jacobs during which I ended my work with him above in:
Audio Clip 2
132) Shortly after I ended my work with Dr. Jacobs, I suddenly remembered that I had written notes in my sleep in 2004, and I realized that I had written the emails in my sleep.
133) I told Dr. Jacobs this, but his initial reaction was belligerent and insulting. I think that this was because if I was right, it meant that Elizabeth was a hoaxer.
134) After I ended my work with Dr. Jacobs, I took time out to recover from what had happened. I began the long process of unraveling the effects of about one hundred and eighty hours of his incompetent and abusive hypnosis on me, that had been blended with his bizarre conduct towards me between the sessions.
135) After I began to recover, I decided to go back to my research, which was what I was interested in. I planned to publish it on this website.
136) Although it is my right to talk openly about what occurred while I was Dr. Jacobs' research subject, I wanted to move forward with my research in a positive atmosphere.
137) In mid 2007, I contacted Dr. Jacobs and asked him whether we could write a joint statement about what had occurred, that we were both comfortable with, that I could put on my website to explain why we no longer worked together.
138) Dr. Jacobs responded by trying to intimidate me into not talking about what occurred, and he threatened to reveal my identity if I talked about the hybrid instant messaging (although he later retracted that threat.)
139) I was shocked by Dr. Jacobs' response. Nevertheless, I persevered in trying to work out an agreement with him. I have presented an audio clip of a conversation that I had with Dr. Jacobs about this above in:
Audio Clip 8
140) I subsequently received a letter from Dr. Jacobs' close friend and "alien abduction" research colleague, the late Budd Hopkins, in which it was apparent that Dr. Jacobs had defamed me to him. When I questioned Dr. Jacobs about it, he denied it, and this led to conflict between us that eventuated in the breakdown of our discussions.
141) In mid 2007, I sent a few more emails from my computer while I was asleep. Eventually I woke up sitting in front of the computer and about to write an email. I had been dreaming about an "alien" telling me something about a change, and I think that I had been going to write about that.
142) I told Dr. Jacobs this, but I did not receive a response from him.
143) In late 2007, I published this website. At that time I had a short diplomatic account of my work with Dr. Jacobs on it, which I hoped would allow both of us to move forward from the situation in a positive way.
144) Immediately afterwards, however, Elizabeth posted a dishonest and defamatory statement about me on her former blog site. She alleged that I had told "blatant lies" about what had occurred, and she implied that I was an irrational mentally ill stalker.
145) Elizabeth subsequently put a disclaimer at the top of her defamatory statement, in which she said that Dr. Jacobs had not had anything to do with it.
146) However, Dr. Jacobs gave his silent support to Elizabeth's statement, and I learned that he was engaging in defamation of me behind the scenes as well.
147) I am of the opinion that Dr. Jacobs did this deliberately to discredit me, so that no one would listen to me if I told them about his unethical conduct towards me as a researcher.
148) As I had provided a link to Elizabeth's blog site account of the alleged "hybrid" instant messaging, and the supposed "hybrids'"attempts to locate Dr. Jacobs, as a way to substantiate what I said about her claims, I wrote a rebuttal to her defamatory statement.
149) In September 2008, after having becoming aware of the extent of Dr. Jacobs' defamation of me, I filed a complaint about his conduct with Temple University.
150) In my opinion, Temple University did not investigate the matter properly, but chose to cover it up instead to protect themselves from liability.
151) I subsequently filed a complaint with the US Department of Health's Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP), about Temple University's failure, in my opinion, to investigate the matter properly.
152) Temple University responded to the OHRP by claiming that Dr. Jacobs was not conducting "research", but was just recording "oral history", and that therefore the OHRP did not have the mandate to investigate the matter.
153) The OHRP accepted that position, but nevertheless asked Temple University to investigate it voluntarily.
154) Temple University, however, told me that, although they were sympathetic with my position, that they could not do that as Dr. Jacobs was not conducting "research".
155) Temple University said that they had told Dr. Jacobs to remove all references to Temple University and to "research" in his future work with people. In my opinion, they did this as a way to avoid liability for his misconduct with his research subjects.
156) Meanwhile, Dr. Jacobs is still promoting himself publicly as a Professor at Temple University and as an academic researcher in the field, and is successfully convincing people that he is a competent and ethical hypnotist, in spite of his extremely unethical and abusive research practices.
157) In my opinion, Dr. Jacobs has been able to get away with this because his work is not under public scrutiny. Instead, it is done behind closed doors with research subjects who are in a vulnerable social position, who have to maintain anonymity to protect themselves and their families.
158) In addition, Dr. Jacobs is able to use his high status and connections in the field of Ufology to shut down research subjects who criticize him publicly, as I have discovered myself.
159) I am not the only former research subject of Dr. Jacobs who is critical of his conduct. I know of a number of former research subjects of his who have raised concerns about his conduct, although I do not know of anyone who has material about this currently available on the internet.
160) In late 2007, I was contacted through my website by another former research subject of Dr. Jacobs, a twenty-one-year-old man, who is known in Dr. Jacobs' work as 'Brian Reed'.
161) Dr. Jacobs took Brian on as his research subject in early 2007.
162) Brian told me about his experience as a research subject of Dr. Jacobs, which was in some respects similar to my own.
163) Brian told me that Dr. Jacobs asked him leading questions during his hypnosis sessions, and he thinks that he confabulated some of his hypnotically retrieved memories as a result.
164) I learned through Brian that Dr. Jacobs hired him to transcribe his other research subjects hypnosis sessions for him, including while he was undergoing hypnosis with him. He said that he transcribed some of my own hypnosis sessions.
165) Dr. Jacobs' practice of hiring his research subjects to transcribe each other's hypnosis sessions obviously has the potential to contaminate their hypnotically retrieved memories.
166) Brian told me that after one of his hypnosis sessions, he realized that one of the events that he had remembered under hypnosis was similar to an event in one of my own hypnosis sessions that he had transcribed.
167) Brian told me that the primary area in which he doubted his hypnotically retrieved memories was in regard to the "hybrids" and their role. He said that Dr. Jacobs had done the main research in this area with himself, Elizabeth and myself, and that he was of the opinion that Dr. Jacobs' research methods with us were poor, and that he did not trust any of it.
168) I learned through Brian that Dr. Jacobs became concerned that "hybrids" would follow Brian to his home when he went there for hypnosis sessions.
169) Brian told me:
"In a session I had with Jacobs, my last one in fact, he was very
self-concerned and unsympathetic. In my session, I was being
approached by several of the "higher-up" beings, and they were very
upset and did various unpleasant actions against me …. Instead of
expressing sorrow for their ill treatment of me, he said "I'm glad that
they have bigger fish to fry now besides me. You're my new best
friend." He then tried to instill a message in me, using hypnosis, so they
would believe that he wasn't doing anything wrong and that I was "the
bad guy." After this session was over, Jacobs stated to me that he
would no longer regress me unless I "felt" that they had made
references to him, in which case I was supposed to contact him so
he could look into it. Obviously, this was very devastating to me as I
looked to Jacobs as one of the only people who could understand my
situation … ."
170) Before I ended my work with Dr. Jacobs in early 2007, he told me that he had begun conducting hypnosis with Elizabeth on instant messenger. I learned through Brian that Elizabeth subsequently told him that for a period Dr. Jacobs conducted hypnosis with her on instant messenger every night.
171) In my opinion, the fact that Dr. Jacobs conducted hypnosis with Elizabeth on instant messenger every night for a period, is a further indication that he was involved in a psychological "game" with her, that he subsequently involved both Brian and myself in.
172) Following a complicated series of events, Brian began to receive instant messaging communications from Elizabeth's computer which she told him were written by "hybrids".
173) I learned through Brian that Elizabeth began to build up a story of him being under threat from "hybrids", in a way that mirrored the situation with Dr. Jacobs.
174) Brian told me that initially he believed Elizabeth, because he trusted her. However, he said that he began to get a "funny feeling" about some of her claims.
175) In mid August 2007, while Brian was engaged in an instant messaging conversation with one of Elizabeth's "hybrids", he told the "hybrid" that he had heard of a procedure that "aliens" performed on "abductees", and he asked the "hybrid" what it was for.
176) In fact, Brian had made the procedure up, in order to test whether Elizabeth was writing the "hybrid" instant messaging.
177) The "hybrid" responded by explaining to Brian what the "aliens" used the procedure for. At that point, Brian realized that Elizabeth was writing the "hybrid" instant messaging.
178) I learned through Brian that he told Dr. Jacobs that he had caught Elizabeth out and that he thought that she was a very good liar and manipulator.
179) A few days after Brian had caught Elizabeth out, she published an additional blog site on her blogger account, which she pretended was written by someone else. Eventually she pretended that it was written by a man. However, the contents of the blog posts were distorted accounts of what had happened with Dr. Jacobs, Brian and myself, so they were obviously written by her. In my opinion, it was probably her intention to write the posts in such a way that people who read them who knew about her case would realize that it was her.
180) In her first two posts, Elizabeth did not acknowledge that Brian had caught her out. Instead she said that he had just suddenly decided that, "…all the alien abduction stuff is BS…and so am I."
181) In her third post, Elizabeth provided a fictionalized version of what had happened first with Dr. Jacobs, then with myself, and then with Brian.
182) As an example of how Elizabeth fictionalized the accounts, in regard to myself she said:
"One day, I got an email from a mutual friend (she never did send me
anything directly) stating that this woman had told him I had made
everything up and all that I had ever told her was a lie. I was
dumbfounded. She had confirmed things I had said many times. If I
was lying - then so was she. But, she insisted."
183) In fact, I had never confirmed anything about Elizabeth's experiences at all. She took the fact that if I had written my sleep emails myself, that it meant that she had lied when she had said that "hybrids" had told her that they had written them, and twisted it around to say something completely untrue.
184) In her next post, Elizabeth made another fictional reference to myself.
185) Elizabeth said:
"… before friend #2 bailed on me, she sat one day in my kitchen and we
were drinking coffee. It was a pretty normal conversation about kids
and the like when she suddenly started telling me she didn't think I
should be talking about my experiences to people. She said she was
worried for me and that she had woken up with the idea in her head that
I was somehow endangering my kids with all of this. I was stunned. I
told her I didn't think so and that if she was uncomfortable hearing
about it, I would stop telling her. She seemed to kind of come back to
herself then and told me no, everything was fine."
186) Elizabeth's story about sitting and drinking coffee was made up and never happened. However, in my opinion, it was a reference to the fact that I had told Dr. Jacobs that I was concerned when he had told me that she had said that she was losing interest in her children, and she was having problems caring for them properly. I had tried to raise the possibility with him that it was a symptom of the depression that she had often said that she was suffering from. As mentioned above, Dr. Jacobs had refused to acknowledge that possibility, but had just told me that the "hybrids/aliens" had made her feel that way.
187) In two later posts, Elizabeth said that she thought that the "aliens" had got to Brian and myself, and that they had turned us against her.
188) In two subsequent posts, Elizabeth claimed that she had found out that either Brian, or I, had been lying all along. She did not say which one of us she was referring to, or what the evidence was, so she cast doubt on both of us with having to substantiate it. In my opinion, it was an attempt to deflect her own deception onto us, as we had both realized that she was a hoaxer.
189) Elizabeth wrote all the blog posts using the pseudonym "Elizabeth".
190) In her last post, Elizabeth suddenly pretended that she was a man, even though she had been using the pseudonym "Elizabeth".
191) In her post, Elizabeth said:
"Then I went into my office and found my computer shut down. Since I
don't generally shut it off at night, I thought the girls must have been
playing with it. I booted it up to find … well, a mess. Icons missing, files
gone, programs demanding passwords that I never set up so don't
know, etc. It took me all day to get it working again, but some things
are gone forever."
192) This is what Elizabeth frequently claimed that "hybrids" did to her computer when they used it.
193) Brian told me that in late 2007, Dr. Jacobs arranged for Elizabeth to take a polygraph test, on whether she had written "hybrid" instant messaging to both Dr. Jacobs and Brian while pretending to be a "hybrid" who she named "Jay".
194) The "hybrid" named "Jay" was the same "hybrid" who Dr. Jacobs had told me had warned him it was "dangerous" for him to work with me, and who had previously told Dr. Jacobs that "hybrids" had written my sleep emails.
195) Elizabeth passed the polygraph test.
196) However, I learned through Brian that Dr. Jacobs and Elizabeth both misled the polygraph examiner as to what she was actually accused of.
197) Dr. Jacobs and Elizabeth led the polygraph examiner to believe that she had a human friend who came to visit her at her home regularly, whose existence was not in question, and that she was accused of impersonating this human friend on instant messenger while chatting with Dr. Jacobs and Brian.
198) However, what Elizabeth was actually accused of was of making up a fictional "hybrid" character named "Jay" and then pretending to be that fictional "hybrid" on instant messenger while chatting with Dr. Jacobs and Brian.
199) I later sought advice from a polygraph examiner about this, using an analogous example so as to avoid identifying Elizabeth. He told me that if a polygraph examinee (Elizabeth in this case) cooperated in a deception of a polygraph examiner, with the knowledge and consent of the person requesting the polygraph (Dr. Jacobs in this case), that this could remove some of the anxiety connected with the real issue and help the examinee to pass the polygraph even if they were lying. He said that this is because the polygraph operates on "fear of detection" and that once this is lessened or removed, the overall reliability of the results will be affected.
200) In addition, polygraphs are a controversial technique for detecting deception, and there is much debate about the accuracy of the results obtained from them.
201) Brian and I are both of the opinion that the polygraph result is wrong, and that it is outweighed by the other evidence of Elizabeth's deception.
202) Although Brian and I both independently came to the opinion that Elizabeth was fabricating her experiences, we both tried at different times to tell Dr. Jacobs the reasons why we came to those opinions, and Brian set up a test and caught her out, Dr. Jacobs continued to support her claims.
203) As mentioned above, much later I came to the opinion that Dr. Jacobs knew that Elizabeth was fabricating her "experiences", but that he perpetuated it because he got something out of it.
204) In my opinion, Dr. Jacobs subsequently deliberately involved both Brian and myself in his psychologically abusive "game" with Elizabeth, which included him putting hypnotic suggestions in my mind that I had Multiple Personality Disorder, and using hypnosis to instill a message in Brian's mind that Brian was "the bad guy", with complete disregard for our welfare as his research subjects, because it added to whatever he got from it.
205) In early November 2007, UFO researcher James Bartley published an article on his website containing an "alien abduction" account by an "abductee" using the pseudonym "Karen". Most of the details of "Karen's" account are identical to Elizabeth's account, and in my opinion, "Karen" is almost certainly Elizabeth.
206) On his website, James Bartley describes himself as an "abductee". He says that he is a "student of Military History with an emphasis on Intelligence- Counterintelligence and Special Operations." In addition, he says that he "worked for the Civil Service at a major military command in an Intelligence related capacity." He says that he is a former business owner, and that he has "worked in the Semiconductor Industry, the Telecommunications Industry and in County Government as an Ombudsmen."
207) James Bartley's website is at:
James Bartley Website
208) James Bartley's article containing "Karen's" account is at:
James Bartley: A Female Abductee's Revelations Of Hybrid Infiltration
209) In the article "Karen" is quoted as saying:
"There is another group I frequently interact with that seems more
concerned with security. Never once has one of these security-minded
hybrids ever shown any interest in fitting into our world. They are
concerned that everything they do remain secret and that no proof of
the ongoing program is obtained. Because I talk about my experiences
with some people, I've had many dealings with these security-minded
hybrids. Their focus is completely on secrecy, compliance, and
protection for both the hybrids and the other aliens."
210) This is typical of what Elizabeth says about her "experiences".
211) The article quoted "Karen" as saying that "hybrids" had made some of her friends break off their friendship with her. In my opinion, this was almost certainly Elizabeth referring to Brian and myself:
"KA ["Karen"] - As you know, this is still a bit difficult for me to talk
about as I just suffered another loss of a friend. They have told me on
many occasions that if I speak to anyone in detail about them or my
experiences, they will find the person and end the relationship I have
with them. After several in a row, I'm now a believer. …
"My feeling is that the security-minded hybrids have decided I shouldn't
speak to anyone about my experiences. Furthermore, there has been a
concerted effort to remove any kind of support system I have that may
encourage me to resist them, and also to discredit what I say so that if
the information does become public at some point, no one will pay
attention to it. They have been very effective so far. I do believe if I
ever begin working with someone again, that person will also be cut off
from me in the same way."
212) Further on in the article, James Bartley said:
"She had been going through a period of harassment and cyber stalking
from other abductees who had been "turned" against her. These other
abductees had befriended her but eventually they were manipulated to
turn against her. These easily manipulated abductees (which I've
always referred to as "Muppets") then began a smear campaign against
her on the internet. They falsely claimed that Karen fabricated all of her
stories and was harassing them!"
213) In fact, at that time Brian had not said anything publicly about what happened (although he did later). I was the only person who had spoken publicly about it at the time, and I had never claimed that Elizabeth was "harassing" me.
214) It appears that "Karen" started to build up a threat story with James Bartley that mirrored the "threat" stories that Elizabeth had previously built up with both Dr. Jacobs and Brian.
215) James Bartley said:
"Karen purposely avoided contact with me for a few days but
eventually felt compelled to tell me about this tall shadow being and to
warn me about him. …
"Karen was more concerned about my safety than her own."
216) I initially wanted to move on from my experience as Dr. Jacobs' research subject in a positive atmosphere, by putting a diplomatic account on my website that did not provide the full details of what occurred.
217) However, I now believe that it was the wrong thing to do. I think that I should have made the situation public from the beginning.
218) If I had spoken out publicly from the start, perhaps Brian would not have had to go through what he did, when Dr. Jacobs took him on as a research subject after me. Perhaps there are other people who have been harmed who I do not know about, who could also have been protected if I had spoken out earlier.
219) As mentioned above, "abductees" are in a vulnerable social position. The vast majority of us have to maintain our anonymity, to avoid the negative repercussions of being open about our experiences.
220) It is an unfortunate fact that there is a huge social stigma associated with "alien abduction", whatever the cause of the phenomenon is.
221) If an "abductee" is open about their experiences, in many cases they will be without a job, and their career will be over. In addition, they will face numerous other problems, such as the loss of friends who do not understand the phenomenon, the potential loss of custody of their children in divorce cases, and so on. Many people in society equate "alien abduction" experiences with mental illness, so if an "abductee" is open about their experiences, they will also immediately face the same pressures that people with mental illness face.
222) It is a difficult position to be in, and for this reason, the overwhelming majority of "abductees" maintain their anonymity, to protect not only themselves, but their families as well.
223) At the time that I became Dr. Jacobs' research subject, I did so only on condition that my anonymity would be protected. He signed Temple University research consent forms with me in which he guaranteed to maintain my anonymity as a requirement for the research to go ahead.
224) Dr. Jacobs does this with all of his research subjects, for good reason.
225) I am now in the position where I have to take action in regard to Dr. Jacobs' serious misconduct towards me, but I am having to do so while at the same time doing everything that I can to try to maintain my anonymity, in order to protect my family and myself from further harm.
226) If people have to remain anonymous, then it is difficult for them to utilize the full means of redress that are available to people who are not constrained in this way.
227) I have tried to take steps to have Dr. Jacobs' conduct as a researcher investigated through the proper channels, by filing complaints with Temple University and the Office for Human Research Protections, but to date absolutely nothing has been done about it.
228) This is not a character assassination of Dr. Jacobs. I am merely trying, in the only way that I know how, to make my story known, so that others will not suffer the same abuse from Dr. Jacobs, or from any other unethical researchers.
229) Unfortunately, the phenomenon is still so suppressed by society, that there are few places people can turn to for help. There appear to be no effective regulations in place to protect vulnerable experiencers of the phenomenon. It seems as though word of mouth is the main protection that we have at this time.
230) I have solid evidence to back up everything that I have said. This includes my email correspondence with Dr. Jacobs and Elizabeth, the recordings of all of my hypnosis sessions, and the recordings of telephone conversations that I had with Dr. Jacobs.
231) Dr. Jacobs has resorted to defaming me, and using his status in the field to attempt to cover it up.
232) I have stood behind my allegations, and made them public.
233) Dr. Jacobs knows my real identity, and so does Temple University.
234) I have published some of the telephone conversations that I had with Dr. Jacobs above, even though I am anxious about the possibility of someone recognizing my voice, because I believe that it is important that this issue is not covered up.
235) I have provided my real name to Jeremy Vaeni and Jeff Ritzmann of the Paratopia internet radio show, who have raised this issue within the UFO community on their show.
236) I hope that by making this public, that it will highlight the important issues that need to be addressed in regard to the investigation of anomalous experiences by using human research subjects, including the use of hypnosis which can profoundly alter a person's sense of their own identity. If safeguards can be put in pace so that it is not repeated in the future with other research subjects, perhaps some good can come out of it after all.
