Emma Woods: Is it Alien Abduction...?

Rebuttal to Dr. David Jacobs

| Home |

On April 4, 2010, "alien abduction" researcher, Dr. David M. Jacobs, of Temple University, posted an extremely dishonest statement about me on his website in which he accused me of engaging in a "defamation campaign" against him, and he implied that I had a Borderline Personality Disorder that was motivating me to do it (see The Defamation Campaign.)

Dr. Jacobs' statement consists of a series of outright lies and distortions, and in my opinion it is a cynical attempt to damage my personal reputation so that the evidence that I have presented publicly about his misconduct towards me as a research subject is not listened to.

Dr. Jacobs posted his statement following two Paratopia internet radio shows which addressed the issue of his misconduct, and the wider implications of the use of hypnosis in "alien abduction" research.

The first Paratopia show was based on the recording of a telephone conversation between Dr. Jacobs and myself about his work with me as a research subject, with editorial commentary by the hosts.

The second Paratopia show was an interview that the hosts conducted with me about the events.

The two Paratopia shows concerned followed a previous show in which the hosts interviewed Emory University Professor of Psychology, Dr. Scott Lilienfeld, about the inherent dangers of using hypnosis as a memory retrieval tool.

The three Paratopia internet radio shows together sparked debate in the UFO research field about the issues.

Subsequently, Dr. Jacobs, along with UFO researchers Budd Hopkins and Kevin D. Randle, participated in a discussion on The Paracast radio show about how "alien abduction" research should be conducted.

On the day that The Paracast show aired, Dr. Jacobs posted his defamatory statement about me on his website. He also referred to it during the show.

Dr. Jacobs made additional defamatory statements about me during The Paracast show, and later on the Coast to Coast AM radio show, which I address at the end of this rebuttal.

NOTICE: Dr. Jacobs' ongoing changes of fact in his statement

Soon after Dr. Jacobs posted his extremely dishonest and defamatory statement about me on his website, I began to write this rebuttal to it. I went through his statement paragraph by paragraph and responded to it in order to set the record straight.

As there were many points in Dr. Jacobs' statement, I began to publish the initial sections of this rebuttal as I wrote them, with a note saying that there was more to come.

On April 7, 2010, I realized that Dr. Jacobs had gone back and revised some of the lies that he had told in the initial sections of his original statement, after I had posted the initial sections of this rebuttal in which I refuted them.

The changes that Dr. Jacobs made were not minor adjustments, but were substantial statements of fact.

(Although Dr. Jacobs made significant changes to the initial sections of his original statement, they are nevertheless still factually inaccurate and calculated to convey the false impression that I am mentally ill.)

Dr. Jacobs' revisions of his original statement following my rebuttal are, in my opinion, a further example of his dishonesty. They demonstrate that his statement has no basis in reality, but is simply intended to try to discredit me personally so that what I have made public about his misconduct towards me as his research subject is not listened to.

As Dr. Jacobs has altered his original statements following my response, I have presented here first his original paragraphs, followed by my rebuttal, and then his revised paragraphs. This will make it easy to see the substantial changes that he made as I responded, and to grasp the full extent of his dishonesty.

(1) Dr. Jacobs originally wrote:

"Over the past few months, the Internet has been filled with material from a woman who is on a campaign to defame me. This has become an issue that will not go away, and there are false rumors about my competence. As a result of this woman's obsessive behavior, in which she relentlessly piles false allegations upon false allegations, I have no choice but to respond. I do so in the essay below. I've kept it as short as possible to explain the situation adequately. If you intend to read my essay, I strongly urge you to read the following blog first: BPD Distortion Campaigns, also at BPD Distortion Campaigns (angiEmedia).

Dr. Jacobs has recommended that people read a blog about people with Borderline Personality Disorder who engage in campaigns to destroy innocent people. By doing so, he is attempting to convince people that the evidence that I have made public about his serious misconduct towards me as a researcher is baseless, and that I have a Borderline Personality Disorder that has motivated me to make false allegations against him.

However, I have been assessed by mental health professionals as being psychologically normal, and as not suffering from any personality disorders. Dr. Jacobs fails to mention that he has in his possession an original copy of a psychological assessment of me by my former therapist of ten years which states this (see Therapy Assessment.) My current therapist likewise considers me to be psychologically normal, and supports the actions that I have taken in making Dr. Jacobs misconduct towards me known as a matter of public interest.

Dr. Jacobs states that I have made "false allegations upon false allegations" against him. However, this is not the case. I have made specific allegations against him, and I have provided evidence to substantiate everything that I have said. This includes the recordings of several telephone conversations that I had with him about the events (see Conversations with Dr. David Jacobs - Audio Clips.)

Dr. Jacobs' attempt to portray me as mentally ill in order to try to discredit what I have said about his misconduct is a continuation of his abuse of me as his research subject.

Dr. Jacobs' subsequent change following my rebuttal:

Following my rebuttal to this section of Dr. Jacobs' defamatory statement about me, he changed the sentence in which he told readers, "I strongly urge you" to read the blog about people with Borderline Personality Disorder. He reduced his emphasis slightly to say that readers, "might want to read" the blog for "background information first".

(2) Dr. Jacobs writes:

"Since 1986 I have helped some 150 people who have reported suspected UFO abduction experiences recover their memories of these events. Most of these people have been grateful that they had the opportunity to gain intellectual and emotional control over situations that have intruded upon their lives since they were children.

"I have met all of these people face to face, except one. The one exception is the woman who is mounting the defamation campaign against me. I call her "Alice" in this essay. I have never met her because she lives in another country, 8,000 miles away."

I use the pseudonym "Emma Woods", but Dr. Jacobs has chosen to refer to me as "Alice". In my opinion, he has done this so that people who read his statement who have not heard about me will not be able to go to my website and examine the evidence that I have provided about his misconduct.

Dr. Jacobs is aware of the fact that his research subjects require anonymity in order to avoid the negative effects of the social stigma of the subject area. Recently a number of people have speculated on message boards about which country I live in. In my opinion, Dr. Jacobs' statement that I live in a country "8,000 miles away" from him is a deliberate attempt to confirm to people the country that I live in, as a form of retaliation because I have made his misconduct public, and with the implied intimidation that he may choose to make other potentially identifying information about me known if I continue to speak publicly about his abusive behavior towards me.

In my opinion, in these two paragraphs Dr. Jacobs tries to convey the impression that I am the only former research subject of his who has been critical of his conduct.

However, this is not the case. While I was Dr. Jacobs' research subject, he talked to me about two other former research subjects of his who had been critical of him. After I had chosen to end my work with Dr. Jacobs, I was contacted through my website by a twenty-one-year-old man who Dr. Jacobs had taken on as a research subject after me. The young man told me about Dr. Jacobs' misconduct towards him, which I go into more detail about further on in this rebuttal. In addition, I learned through the young man about another woman who had been critical of Dr. Jacobs' conduct towards her.

Consequently, I now know of at least four other former research subjects of Dr. Jacobs who have expressed concerns about his conduct towards them. In my opinion, it is quite possible that there are others as well.

At the time that Dr. Jacobs told me about one of his former research subjects who had been critical of him, he said that she was "crazy", and that she had " Narcissistic Personality Disorder". He implied that her criticism of him was evidence of her psychological problems. In view of his current attempts to portray my legitimate criticism of his misconduct towards me as being a symptom of "Borderline Personality Disorder", I now think that it is entirely possible that he simply defamed her to me in the same way that he is now defaming me to others, in order to cover up his misconduct.

(3) Dr. Jacobs originally wrote:

"The Beginning

Alice first contacted me and my colleague Budd Hopkins in November 2004 by sending us, unsolicited, large boxes of identical material on her case. There were over 700 pages covering in detail a vast amount of intimate information about herself and her unusual experiences. The material spanned a period of years. Some of the material was typed, some was handwritten, and some was on scraps of paper. Upon Alice's request, her therapist had signed each description of an unusual experience in order to authenticate it. On some pages the therapist's signature appears as many as five or six times."

What Dr. Jacobs has said here is demonstrably untrue and is clearly intended to portray me as obsessive.

In fact, I first contacted Budd Hopkins by letter in March 2001. I spoke to Budd Hopkins on the telephone the following year, and he told me that he liked my letter and asked if he could publish it in his newsletter without my name. I said that he could do that, although I do not know whether he did or not.

Budd Hopkins gave me his email address and the mailing address of his vacation home. In August 2002, I received two questionnaires from him in the mail that I filled out and returned to him. He told me that based on the results of the questionnaires, that it was likely that I was being "abducted" by "aliens". He said that the only way that I could investigate this was by having hypnosis.

In July 2002, my former therapist contacted Dr. Jacobs by email. Dr. Jacobs had a page on his website in which he said that he provided information to therapists, and my therapist asked for information and advice in dealing with my case. Dr. Jacobs sent him some information by email, and I made contact with Dr. Jacobs myself shortly afterwards. He gave me his home telephone number, and we communicated by telephone and email over the next couple of years.

My therapist had previously suggested to me that I keep a record of my experiences, which I had been doing. I asked both Dr. Jacobs and Budd Hopkins if I could send them sections of it for their feedback, and they both said that they would like me to. Dr. Jacobs told me that he was interested in it, and he gave me advice on events to record and ways to do so.

My former therapist signed the pages of my record to verify that I had told him about my experiences. He thought that this was an appropriate thing to do in the circumstances, as it confirmed that his assessment of me was based on full knowledge of them. He signed the statements once, generally at the bottom of each page. However, when I sent copies of the material to Dr. Jacobs, I photocopied some of the pages in a smaller size in order to fit several pages onto one page. Therefore, some of the photocopied pages had several signatures on them as they contained several pages. Dr. Jacobs obviously knows this, but he has deliberately misrepresented it to imply that there was something "obsessive" about it.

I did not send Dr. Jacobs or Budd Hopkins any material in November 2004 as Dr. Jacobs claims. Instead, I sent both of them small sections of my record in April and December 2003. Dr. Jacobs told me that he was very interested in it, and he asked me to keep sending it to him, saying, "I will take as much of it as I can get."

In December 2004, I became Dr. Jacobs' research subject. A few months later, in March 2005, I sent him and Budd Hopkins a large section of my research. It was not "unsolicited", as Dr. Jacobs claims. In fact, he told me that he wanted me to send it to him, and that he was looking forward to receiving it. He said that he thought that it was unique, and that it would make a "significant contribution" to UFO research. In 2006, he published some of it on his own website.

Dr. Jacobs' subsequent change following my rebuttal:

Following my rebuttal to this section of Dr. Jacobs' defamatory statement, he completely changed what he initially wrote.

Dr. Jacobs' new version of this section of his statement is the following:

"The Beginning

Alice's therapist first wrote to me about his client in 2002. He was convinced that quite unusual things had happened to her and he was writing on her behalf because she wished to remain anonymous. She had wanted to get in touch with me or with Budd Hopkins to try to help her explain some of these events. A few months later she contacted both Budd Hopkins and me directly. After series of phone conversations with her in late 2004, she sent us large boxes of identical material on her case.

Dr. Jacobs fails to give any explanation for his previous demonstrably untrue statements about how I made contact with him. In addition, he now provides a different false account of the events.

Dr. Jacobs' new version of the events is once again clearly intended to portray me as obsessive.

This time, Dr. Jacobs attempts to give the false impression that after I made contact with him and Mr. Hopkins in 2002, that there was no further contact between us until "a series of phone conversations" in "late 2004", after which I sent them both "large boxes of identical material".

Although Dr. Jacobs has now removed his original lie that I sent them the material in November 2004, a month before I became his research subject, he nevertheless still attempts to convey the false impression that I sent it to him before I became his research subject, in late 2004, rather than in March 2005, three months after I had become his research subject.

In addition, despite the fact that Dr. Jacobs has now retracted his original false statement that the material that I sent him was "unsolicited", he continues to try to give this misleading impression by failing to disclose that he told me that he wanted me to send the material to him, and that he was looking forward to receiving it.

(4) Dr. Jacobs originally wrote:

"I had never received such an overwhelming amount of unsolicited [emphasis added] information. Apparently her habit of extreme information mega-sharing is an ongoing one, as anyone presently receiving her massive e-mail defamation campaign against me can attest."

I think that this paragraph of Dr. Jacobs' statement makes clear why he lied in the preceding paragraph about the material that I sent to him and Budd Hopkins.

In early 2010, I emailed copies of the first four parts of a submission that I made to the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) about Temple University's failure, in my opinion, to investigate Dr. Jacobs' misconduct adequately, to many people within the UFO research field as a way to try to make the issue known. The OHRP asked me to provide as much detail as possible, and it was a large volume of material. I imagine that many of the people who received it would have been surprised by it, but I did it as I believe that it is a matter of public interest that the issue is known about.

In my opinion, Dr. Jacobs is trying to capitalize on this, by conveying the false idea that he also received a large amount of "unsolicited" material from me, and that it was a sign that I have a mental problem, in the hope that the people who received the material from me about his misconduct will consequently discount it.

Dr. Jacobs' subsequent change following my rebuttal:

Following my rebuttal to this section of Dr. Jacobs' defamatory statement about me, he changed the sentence in which he told readers, "I had never received such an overwhelming amount of unsolicited information." He removed the word "unsolicited", saying instead: "I had never received such an overwhelming amount of information."

Dr. Jacobs provides no explanation for his previous false claim that the material that I sent him was "unsolicited".

As before, Dr. Jacobs does not disclose that he told me that he wanted me to send the material to him and that he was looking forward to receiving it.

(5) Dr. Jacobs writes:

"My first reaction to Alice's request for help was to be wary of working with someone so far away and who seemed overly obsessed with her possible UFO experiences. Still, I was sympathetic to Alice's situation. Because I knew no one who was familiar with the UFO abduction phenomenon where Alice lived, I decided to try to help her. I could conduct memory recovery via telephone. Hypnotists widely use the telephone to work with clients at a distance. Of course, telephone communication alone is not optimal because the hypnotist can't observe the person's facial expressions and deportment, both of which can help indicate emotional problems.. [sic]"

Dr. Jacobs says that he thought that I "seemed overly obsessed" with my possible UFO experiences and he implies that he gained that impression from the large amount of material that I sent him. He goes on to say that, nevertheless, he decided to conduct hypnosis with me.

However, Dr. Jacobs took me on as his research subject and began to conduct hypnosis with me in December 2004, and it was only later, in March 2005, that I sent him the large section of my material.

In my opinion, Dr. Jacobs' previous deliberate lie in which he said that I had sent him the large section of my material in November 2004, which would have been a month before he took me on as a research subject, was intended to convey the impression that he thought that I was "obsessed" even before he took me on as a research subject.

Dr. Jacobs is trying to cover up his misconduct towards me by saying that I am mentally ill. As part of this strategy, he is attempting to re-write history to imply that he thought this from the very beginning, in order to deflect attention away from the fact that he only began to say this after I had seriously questioned his conduct.

Dr. Jacobs volunteered to conduct hypnosis with me and to take me on as his research subject. At no stage did I ask him to do this. He has said in public interviews that he does not work with people who have mental health problems. The fact that he asked me to become his research subject after having been in communication with me for over two years, and that he then worked with me as his research subject for two years after that, makes it clear that he did not think that I had any mental health problems whatsoever. He assured me of this himself on many occasions.

To illustrate what Dr. Jacobs actually told me about my material, I have presented here an audio clip from my eleventh hypnosis session in which he told me that he thought that it was "absolutely remarkable", "put together in a scientific way" and "unique". He acknowledges in the audio clip that he often said this to me.

(6) Dr. Jacobs writes:

"Before I continue, it's important to explain how I work. I'm not a psychologist, psychiatrist, or psychotherapist. My work with UFO abductees is focused on helping them recover and understand their memories. I've been researching abductions and working with potential abductees since 1986. I spend many hours over a period of months, even years, with each person who seeks out my help. The possible abductee can stop seeing me at any point. I don't charge for my services. In fact, in some situations-Alice is one example--I've donated video and audio recording equipment to potential abductees. If the potential abductee is seeing a therapist, my standard procedure is to ask the possible abductee to talk to the therapist about whether there is potential for harm. Memory recovery of abduction experiences can elicit a great deal of emotional and psychological turmoil."

In this paragraph Dr. Jacobs tries to say that he helped me, in an attempt to counteract what I have made public about his misconduct towards me. In fact, Dr. Jacobs engaged in serious psychological abuse of me, which included him using hypnosis to instill hypnotic suggestions in my mind that I had Multiple Personality Disorder so that hostile "aliens/hybrids" would not know that he was researching my case. The following audio clip, from my twenty-ninth hypnosis session, is of him doing this.

This puts Dr. Jacobs' statements about how he has helped people, including myself, in context.

(7) Dr. Jacobs writes:

"It's also important to understand Alice's circumstances. When I began to work with her in December 2004, she shared the information that she was 43 years old, divorced, and had no children, few friends, and virtually no social life. She lived alone in a two-room apartment. She didn't work and was on disability for "allergies." I assume she is still in this situation."

Once again, Dr. Jacobs tries to convey the impression that I am a person with problems, who has "few friends". In fact, I have a loving and supportive family, and good friends. Although I am divorced, I am still close friends with my former husband. Dr. Jacobs is well aware of this, as I sent him audio tapes of several members of my family, four of my friends, and my former husband talking about my experiences. I live in a tiny apartment in a nice area, as Dr. Jacobs also knows. If I wanted to, I could buy a house in another area. However, at this time I am happy to trade space for location, and I do not see any problem with that.

In my opinion, Dr. Jacobs' use of quotation marks around the word "allergies" is intended to imply that I may be on disability because of mental health problems. I have a physical illness, and he knows this as I provided him with information about it. However, he appears to be trying everything that he can to falsely portray me as having psychological problems in order to cover-up his misconduct towards me.

I told Dr. Jacobs my personal circumstances in 2002, when I first made contact with him. His statement that I only told him about myself in December 2004, when he took me on as a research subject, is a continuation of his attempt to cover up the fact that he was in regular communication with me for over two years before I became his research subject.

(8) Dr. Jacobs originally wrote:

"The first step with Alice was to require that she ask her now ex-therapist to agree to the process. Alice's ex-therapist wrote that doing hypnosis with her via telephone would not, in his opinion, have a potential for harm."

Dr. Jacobs clearly intends to give the impression that he required my therapist to agree to his conducting hypnosis with me over the telephone before he did so, and that he obtained a written statement from him saying that it was his opinion that hypnosis with me over the telephone would not have a potential for harm, before he went ahead with it.

However, this is completely false.

At the time that Dr. Jacobs took me on as his research subject, in December 2004, my former therapist had already retired, although he was continuing to assist me with my record as he had become interested in it. Dr. Jacobs told me that he would prefer to obtain my former therapist's agreement before proceeding with the hypnosis. However, my former therapist said that as he was no longer my therapist, that he could not give Dr. Jacobs formal approval to proceed. Dr. Jacobs went ahead with the hypnosis without obtaining any written agreement from my former therapist.

Much later, in 2006, when Dr. Jacobs published my material on his website, my former therapist wrote a statement about the hypnosis sessions which Dr. Jacobs published on his website. In his statement, my former therapist said:

"One aspect of the data gathering process has been the use of hypnosis by researcher Dr. David Jacobs. This raised questions with respect to safety because due to geographical constraints it was impossible to do face to face sessions and the sessions were done by phone. Because of there having been a long period of contact between [my name] and Dr. Jacobs prior to the hypnosis, and the awareness of both of them for the need for local support for [my name] which was put in place, it was my view that it was unlikely to be harmful."

However, this statement was written long after Dr. Jacobs had started conducting hypnosis with me. In addition, my former therapist made it clear in the statement that as he was no longer my therapist at the time, that he did not formally monitor the effects of the hypnosis on me.

In mid January 2006, Dr. Jacobs told me that he thought that when he published my research on his website, that he would be criticized for conducting hypnosis with me over the telephone. He said that he would have to figure out a strategy for how to tell people about it.

Jacobs subsequently wrote a Foreword to my material, in which he addressed the issue of his having conducted hypnosis with me over the telephone. Before publishing it, he sent me a draft copy of it in which he said:

"I suggested that we could explore some experiences on the phone, but that I would only proceed with her now-former therapist's written approval."

He also said:

"In our first few hypnosis sessions I had with her, we arranged for her former therapist to be in the room with her in case she had an adverse reaction and so that she could have someone to rely on for support and counseling."

Both of these statements by Dr. Jacobs were completely false.

At the time, I thought that Dr. Jacobs must have made a mistake. I reminded him that he had not obtained written permission from my former therapist before proceeding to conduct hypnosis with me, and that he had not arranged for him to be in the room with me during any of my hypnosis sessions.

Dr. Jacobs then changed one of the statements in the draft, and said:

"In our first few hypnosis sessions, we arranged for a sympathetic friend to be in the room with her in case she had an adverse reaction and so that she could have someone to rely on for support."

Once again, this statement by Dr. Jacobs was completely false. In addition, he retained his other false statement in the draft.

I once again reminded Dr. Jacobs that these statements were untrue, and he then removed the statement that he had arranged for a sympathetic friend to be in the room with me during the first few hypnosis sessions. However, although I repeatedly reminded him that he had not obtained written permission from my former therapist before proceeding to conduct hypnosis with me, he nevertheless went ahead and published that statement in his Foreword. At my request, he eventually removed that statement from his Foreword after it had been published.

At the time, I thought that Dr. Jacobs' actions were an indicator that he might be in the early stages of dementia. However, I am now of the opinion that he engaged in a deliberate deception to cover himself, which he has repeated in his current statement.

Dr. Jacobs' subsequent change following my rebuttal:

Following my rebuttal to this section of Dr. Jacobs' defamatory statement, he completely changed what he initially wrote.

Dr. Jacobs' new version of this section of his statement is the following:

"As a first step, I normally require a person's therapist to agree to the process. In Alice's case though, her ex-therapist was aware of what was happening from the beginning and later wrote to me that doing hypnosis over the phone was, in his opinion, "unlikely to be harmful." He did not monitor her formally, but if he noticed any harmful effects in the contact he had with her, he stated he would mention them immediately."

Dr. Jacobs fails to give any explanation for his previous statements that gave the false impression that he required my former therapist to agree to his conducting hypnosis with me over the telephone before he did so, and that he obtained a written statement from him saying that it was his opinion that hypnosis with me over the telephone would not have a potential for harm, before he went ahead with it. In addition, Dr. Jacobs now provides a different misleading account of the events.

In his new version of the events, Dr. Jacobs gives the misleading appearance that he obtained informal approval from my former therapist before conducting hypnosis with me. Dr. Jacobs adds, "He did not monitor her formally, but if he noticed any harmful effects in the contact he had with her, he stated he would mention them immediately." He writes this statement as though my former therapist said it in the present tense, before the hypnosis took place, with the implication that my former therapist told him that he would mention any harmful effects as the hypnosis took place.

However, as mentioned above, my former therapist wrote his statement long after Dr. Jacobs had started conducting hypnosis with me. My former therapist made it clear in the statement that as he was no longer my therapist at the time, that he did not formally monitor the effects of the hypnosis on me. At that time, he said that if he had noticed any harmful effects at any point he would have said so immediately. However, I did not discuss the effects of the hypnosis with him, as he was no longer my therapist. (He later became concerned about the effect of the situation on me, and towards the end of my work with Dr. Jacobs he suggested that I consider stopping it.)

Dr. Jacobs makes no mention of his false statements in the Foreword to my material that he published on his website, and he provides no explanation for them.

(9) Dr. Jacobs writes:

"Bizarre Behavior

When I started to work with Alice she seemed reasonable and intelligent, and she sounded articulate. But I gradually began to suspect that she was suffering from deep-seated emotional problems as her behavior became more and more bizarre."

Dr. Jacobs continues his attempt to convince people that I have mental health problems, and he implies that he suspected this while I was his research subject. However, throughout the time that I was his research subject, he made it clear that he did not think that I had any psychological problems at all.

If Dr. Jacobs had really thought that I had mental health problems, he would have stopped working with me immediately, but he did not. In addition, he would not have wanted to use any of my material in his forthcoming book. However, he told me several months after I had ended my work with him that he still wished to use my material in his book (see Conversations with Dr. David Jacobs - Audio Clips - (Audio Clip 8).) He would never have done that if he thought that I was mentally ill.

Dr. Jacobs titles this section of his statement "Bizarre Behavior". However, he was the one who engaged in bizarre behavior, such as putting hypnotic suggestions in my mind that I had Multiple Personality Disorder so that "aliens/hybrids" would not know that he was researching my case. In my opinion, his use of this title, and his claim that my "behavior became more and more bizarre" is an attempt to deflect attention away from the fact that I have talked publicly about his increasingly bizarre behavior towards me while I was his research subject, which I have detailed and substantiated.

(10) Dr. Jacobs originally wrote:

"One example is her telephone calls to me. Alice had an arrangement in which she could make calls to the United States for a very small fee. When we first started working together, she limited her calls to scheduled sessions; but as the months passed, [emphasis added] she called twice, three times, and sometimes five times a week; near the end of the time that we worked together, she called as many as five times a day. It was difficult to get off the phone with her. It seemed that she had boundary issues. At my request, Alice agreed to limit her calls to two a week, but that limit didn't last very long and soon she started calling more frequently. My family remarked on the inappropriateness of her behavior. I began to realize that her behavior indicated that she was growing more obsessed as time went on. I haven't experienced this kind of troubling behavior in all the years I've been working with men and women who describe possible UFO abduction experiences."

Dr. Jacobs once again makes statements that are completely false, with the clear intention to portray me as being mentally ill. I became his research subject in December 2004, and from that time until late 2006, I spoke to him on the telephone only occasionally between hypnosis sessions. I have copies of my telephone bills that have my calls recorded on them, and his statement that "as the months passed" I called him several times a week is demonstrably untrue.

By late 2006, I had been reduced to an emotional wreck by Dr. Jacobs' misuse of hypnosis with me, and by his psychologically abusive "tactics" to prevent "aliens/hybrids" from knowing that he was researching my case. I was depressed, had terrible nightmares, and found it more difficult to cope with my experiences. At that time, he told me that he knew that because of the social stigma of the subject area, that I did not have the usual options for coping with the stress. He said that I could call him as often as I needed to for support. For a period of about ten weeks, I called him virtually every day, and sometimes several times a day. This was something that I had never done before, and I felt terrible about it. However, I was by then so stressed, and had no where to turn to, that I took up his offer simply because I needed it.

At no stage did Dr. Jacobs ever ask me to limit my calls to him to twice a week. However, I was concerned about it myself, as I knew that I was not dealing with my stress properly. Eventually I took the situation in hand, and I began calling him less often, spreading the calls out one day at a time. I aimed to go back to the situation that we had been in before, when I generally only talked to him on the telephone during hypnosis sessions. As it turned out, I ended my work with him before that happened.

In my opinion, the reason that Dr. Jacobs has lied in saying that I began to call him frequently a few months after I became his research subject is in order to give the false impression that I have "boundary issues". In my opinion he has done this to try to cover up the fact that I only started calling him frequently in late 2006, after his psychological abuse of me as a research subject had broken me down.

Dr. Jacobs' subsequent change following my rebuttal:

Following my rebuttal to this section of Dr. Jacobs' defamatory statement, he changed what he initially wrote.

Dr. Jacobs' new version of this section of his statement is the following:

"One example is her telephone calls to me. Alice had an arrangement in which she could make calls to the United States for a very small fee. When we first started working together, she limited her calls to scheduled sessions; but as our time of working together neared the end, [emphasis added] she called twice, three times, and sometimes five times a week; as her behavior deteriorated, she called as many as five times a day. It was difficult to get off the phone with her. It seemed that she had boundary issues. Alice finally agreed to limit her calls to two a week, but that limit didn't last very long and soon she started calling more frequently. My family remarked on the inappropriateness of her behavior. I began to realize that her behavior indicated that she was growing more obsessed as time went on. I haven't experienced this kind of troubling behavior in all the years I've been working with men and women who describe possible UFO abduction experiences."

Dr. Jacobs fails to give any explanation for his previous demonstrably untrue statement that I began to call him often several months after I became his research subject.

Once again, Dr. Jacobs does not disclose that I only called him often for a period of about ten weeks at the end of his work with me, after I had been reduced to an emotional wreck by his misuse of hypnosis with me, and by his psychologically abusive "tactics" to prevent "aliens/hybrids" from knowing that he was researching my case. He does not mention that, at that time, he told me that he knew that because of the social stigma of the subject area, that I did not have the usual options for coping with the stress and that I could call him as often as I needed to for support.

Although Dr. Jacobs has now removed his outright lie that he requested that I limit my calls to him to twice a week, he continues to imply it by saying that I "finally agreed" to this. He neglects to say that I was concerned about it myself, as I knew that I was not dealing with my stress properly, and that I eventually took the situation in hand and began calling him less often.

As before, Dr. Jacobs attempts to give the false impression that I have "boundary issues", to try to cover up the fact that I only started calling him frequently in late 2006, after his psychological abuse of me as a research subject had broken me down.

(11) Dr. Jacobs writes:

"Another example of Alice's troubling behavior comes from her interactions with her alleged abductors. In the following section I provide some context to make this clear.

Reported Threats from her Abductors

Some information is needed to fully understand the reported threats.

First, some background on Alice's abductors: From the beginning of our sessions, she described human-looking aliens ("hybrids") who were visiting her almost on a nightly basis. Abduction researchers have heard accounts of such hybrid beings since the early 1980s, and over the years a number of abductees have indicated to me that hybrid activity had increased dramatically."

Dr. Jacobs' statement that my "interactions" with my "alleged abductors" is "another example" of my "troubling behavior" is outrageous. I have listened to the recordings of all of my hypnosis sessions, and it is clear that he engaged in extensive leading and suggestion with me while I was hypnotized. This was almost certainly directly responsible for most of my hypnotically retrieved "memories" of "hybrids".

To illustrate Dr. Jacobs practice of leading and suggestion while conducting hypnosis, I have presented here an audio clip from my second hypnosis session in which he implanted a false memory in my mind of aliens performing a procedure on me.

(12) Dr. Jacobs writes:

"Second, some background on Alice's "Record," as she called it: For a number of years she had been regularly keeping a "diary" in which she wrote about her ongoing unusual experiences. Early on I invited Alice to put her Record on my website. I thought it would be instructive to others to learn how one person recovered memories through both conscious recall and hypnosis sessions. Alice accepted the invitation. I agreed to edit her material, and my website manager "Elizabeth," who empathized with Alice's situation, generously offered to do the necessary programming free of charge. It was no small task dealing with her text, graphs, illustrations, and charts but we felt that we were helping."

Dr. Jacobs makes no mention of the fact that Elizabeth was his research subject in addition to being his webmaster. In view of the events that occurred in connection with her alleged "experiences", which he directly involved me in, as detailed further on in this rebuttal, his omission of this central fact is unconscionable. It shows the extent of his dishonesty, and the lengths that he is prepared to go to in order to cover up his misconduct towards both Elizabeth and myself.

Dr. Jacobs suggested publishing my material on his website in early 2006. Up until that point he had regularly told me about Elizabeth's "experiences" while I was hypnotized, and I had subsequently begun to confabulate hypnotic "memories" that were similar to hers, based on that suggestion. Once he involved her directly in his work with me, he steadily drew me into a dysfunctional psychological "game" that he was embroiled in with her.

In mid 2006, Dr. Jacobs told me that he had started receiving threatening instant messaging communications from Elizabeth's computer which she had told him were written by "hybrids". He said that he had pretended to the "hybrids" on instant messenger that he was a researcher in Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD), and that he thought that she had MPD, so that they would not know that he was researching her case.

Dr. Jacobs then put hypnotic suggestions in my mind that I had Multiple Personality Disorder, ostensibly so that "hybrids" would also not know that he was researching my case. The following audio clip, from my twenty-ninth hypnosis session, is of him doing this.

A recurring dynamic of Dr. Jacobs' work with me as a research subject was the transfer of aspects of his outlandish and abusive "game" with Elizabeth over to me in this way.

In early 2007, after I had begun to question serious inconsistencies in Elizabeth's claims, Dr. Jacobs told me that he had received a "warning" from one of her "hybrids" on instant messenger saying that it was dangerous for him to work with me, as there were "hybrids" around me who were very concerned about "security" (see Dr. David Jacobs' Account of a "Hybrid" Warning - Audio Clip.)

At that stage, I had come to the opinion that Elizabeth was a hoaxer, and I attempted to raise the obvious question with Dr. Jacobs as to whether she could have written the "hybrid" instant messaging herself. He responded by shouting at me that it was "not possible". I chose to end my work with him the following day (see Conversations with Dr. David Jacobs - Audio Clips - (Audio Clip 2).)

By the time that I ended my work with Dr. Jacobs, I had to give up working on my record of my experiences for several months in order to recover from the psychological abuse that I had been subjected to. This is the actual situation behind Dr. Jacobs' claim that he and Elizabeth had been "helping" me.

(13) Dr. Jacobs writes:

"One set of threats was directed at writing her Record. According to Alice, the hybrids visiting her conveyed displeasure that she was keeping a record. She told me that these hybrid beings wanted her to stop writing about her experiences. Of the 50 abduction events that occurred after we started working together, 32 of them included warnings from her abductors about writing her Record.

"A second set of threats was directed at working with me. Alice reported that when her abductors discovered she was talking to me, they showed serious concern and wanted to know everything about me. They began to pressure her intensely to stop working with me. She said her abductors threatened her with physical punishment if she did not comply with their wishes; later she described the actual physical violence they committed against her for not obeying them. She also told me about threats that her abductors made against me directly; these threats included scenarios in which I was dead. Of the 50 abduction events that occurred after we started working together, 24 of them included warnings from her abductors about working with me."

This is simply outrageous. Dr. Jacobs is trying to imply that the content of my hypnotically retrieved memories is an indicator that I have mental health problems. However, the "memories" that he refers to came about as a direct consequence of his leading and suggestion while I was hypnotized.

Dr. Jacobs fails to disclose that he talked to me while I was hypnotized about Elizabeth's hypnotically retrieved memories before I began to recall the second set of memories that he describes. He told me about her memories of "hybrids" threatening and assaulting her, pressuring her not to tell him about her experiences, demanding to know everything that she knew about him, and making death threats against him. It was only after he told me these things, while I was hypnotized, that I began to confabulate the same sorts of "memories".

I have presented here audio clips of excerpts from my hypnosis sessions with Dr. Jacobs which illustrate how he used leading and suggestion to shape my hypnotic "memories" of "hybrids".
